How It Works

Before and During Appointment

Step 1 — Submit an InquiryStart by filling out the inquiry form. The more information you provide, the better I can determine the safest and most appropriate grooming approach for your cat.Step 2 — Phone ConsultationAfter submition of your form, you will be contacted in 24-48 hours to discuss your cat’s needs, answer any questions, review estimated pricing, and schedule your appointment. A recent Rabies Vaccination info, is either uploaded with the inquiry form or can be emailed or sent through a text message. Vaccinations must be current prior to appointment. This consultation also helps determine whether in-home grooming is a good fit for your cat and allows us to discuss any concerns ahead of time.Step 3 — Appointment DayOn the day of the appointment, I’ll begin with a brief hands-on assessment of your cat’s coat, skin, temperament, and overall condition before grooming starts. If I find significant matting, skin irritation, fleas, injuries, or anything else that may affect the groom, service plan, or pricing, I will discuss it with you before proceeding.Every cat is handled at their individual comfort level. Some cats need extra breaks, slower pacing, or modified handling techniques, and appointments are approached with patience and safety in mind.

Preparing for Your Appointment

For the success of your appointment, please have the following ready before arrival:A bathroom or powder room with access to a bath tub or large sink, that can be closed off and away from other pets, loud noises, loud household activity.Your cat safely contained in a carrier before arrival.
I do not chase, catch, or retrieve hiding cats prior to grooming.
If your cat is not safely contained upon arrival, the appointment may need to be rescheduled.
Creating a calm, controlled environment from the start helps reduce stress and allows your cat to remain as comfortable as possible throughout their appointment.

About

Practical Cats is built around something I've learned through years of rescue work, fostering, TNR, and grooming: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to cats. Practical care means understanding the individual cat and adapting to what works best for them.I began grooming professionally in 2025, but my experience with cats goes back much further. Long before I picked up grooming tools, my life revolved around rescue work, fostering, TNR, and—thanks to the Cat Distribution System—collecting a few cats of my own along the way. From 2009 to 2020, I fostered cats and kittens through organizations such as the Austin Humane Society and Austin Pets Alive. I also participated in Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts throughout Austin and, since returning home, here in Houston as well. Before moving to Austin in 2008, I volunteered with C.A.P.S. in Houston back when it was still a small shelter tucked away off the I-10 feeder near Katy.Working in rescue taught me something important very early on: every cat is different, and trust cannot be rushed.Cat grooming is still far less common than dog grooming, and because of that, many cats go without the care they need. A grooming appointment can reveal issues that might otherwise go unnoticed until they become serious—matting, overgrown nails, skin problems, mobility changes, weight loss, or other concerns that may warrant a veterinary visit.Cats are not small dogs, and they should not be handled like them.My approach is built specifically around feline behavior and comfort. It focuses on calm, safe handling, patience, and adapting the groom to the individual cat. I understand when a situation requires urgency, but I also know when slowing down is the safer and kinder option. Senior cats, anxious cats, easily overstimulated cats, and cats with previous negative grooming experiences often need a different approach than traditional grooming environments can provide.Through my experience in both rescue and grooming, I've learned that many cats struggle with the stressors that begin long before the groom itself—being placed in a carrier, riding in a car, and arriving somewhere unfamiliar. By the time the appointment starts, some cats are already are at their tipping point. That doesn't make them "bad" cats, "ungroomable," or only option for a successful groom is the need of sedation. Often, they simply require a quieter environment, a slower pace, and handling tailored to their individual needs. While I welcome cats of all temperaments, my goal is never to rush through a groom. My priority is always the cat's safety, comfort, and overall experience. That's why I offer in-home grooming. Cats remain in the environment they know best, eliminating many of the stressors associated with traditional salon visits while still receiving professional grooming care.I also strongly believe and know that owner education is an essential part of the grooming process and overall care. Helping owners recognize early warning signs of health and stress, prevention of matting, maintaining coat and nail health, and better understand feline behavior can make a significant difference in a cat's long-term wellbeing and health. My goal is simple: to make professional grooming more accessible, more comfortable, and safer for cats and the people who love them.Practical Cats Grooming Owner and Your New Groomer - Kelly
